Eric van der Voort <SpyderPnt1@aol.com>
Corte Madera, CA USA- hey Jack, love your site, I just want to know more about breeding discus and if there is anyone who lives in the bay area and tries to breed or breeds discus. I would like to get to know them so that it would be cooler if one needed a fish and the other needed another fish to breed so that we could sell or trade to each other. Anyway, email me if anyone lives in the bay area. Eric

stan warwick <tbsw@alaskalife.net>
anchorage, ak USA- Hello,my name is stan and I am very upset! let me tell you the story.I love fish all kinds and I raise and breed all kinds, well I try anyhow.Mom purchased "4 hi-fin cobalt blue wattleys"for my birthday:> (I had 2cobalt blue, and one turqouis-red all taking turns "laying eggs"(gorgeous but not wattleys)and no males.wow ,hopefully this would do the trick.we went to the airport signed for the fish/came home. I noticed 1 fish was awesome, the other 3 well...the water in the bags was noticibly different and tested 2xthe water of the one for ammonia/had higher concentrations of minerals/and more hydroxide ions then hydrogenitwasnot the same water in his bag,as there bags,AND therebags were all the same.NASTY.and they were all smaller and there lines ... stuck between missaligned and deformed.
Gposada@worldnet.att.net assured me bye phone(remember im in alaska)"there are no ponds in florida"when i told him they looked like pond fish!god i wish i had had a recorder going.he also said not to worry he would not send me anymore!!
I got a certificate that didnt even have the species or serial#just wattleys signature,I complained again and got another certificate sent to me.I accepted getting 4to get 1gooddiscus.but i feel my mom was riped off,and when I went to my friend ricks to establish bragin rights.his girlfriend noticed(much to my dismay)that it was a "GUATANTEE" not a guarantee, and that it was not worth thepaper it was printed on.I left while they laughed I was so upset ! check yourcertificate is it real or gabrilex?everyone thinks we are dumb up here.we got the oil,we got the schools, please dont think we are fools!PLEASE MR.WATTLEY FIRE THAT FOOL HE IS MISREPRESENTING YOUR GOOD NAME!THE FISH ARE STILL ALIVE AND ARE NOT OF THE SAME GENETICS!I will be pursuing this when money permits! stanman

Melbourne, VIC Australia- Dear Jack,
Many thanks for the advice you have given throuhout the years! I never miss your 'Ask Jack' column in TFH and only wish we could get your fish in Australia too! I do have a couple of Sunshine discus and Platinum Golds (although not from your stocks!) but they were sold too me under the names 'Golden Peacock' and 'Gold Crowns' and love them. Still, I can only hope that one day discus will be as widely available in Australia as they are in Asia and the United States.

Dean Levrey <cybachef@aol.com>
Margate, FL USA- I first met Jack about twenty years ago when I visited him at his house and wtinessed the largest holding tank for water treatment I had ever seen. I still remember the images of those magnificent fish but was highly intimidated by the mistque of caring for the "delicate discus". Even more impressive was the tall thin gentile man who impressed me with incredible amount of dedication he had to these great animals he pioneered.
Years later I finally got up the courage to dedicate one tank to Jack's Discus. Ever since then, I have been hooked. I firmly believe that the only reason for my success was the incredible health and quality of the four fish I still have some three years later. Thank you Jack, Dean Levrey

rochester, ny USA- hi my name is genadiy. i have been keeping discus for a number of years.
i own a small local pet shop where i sell some of the fish that i breed at home.
i have a question about discus maybe you could answer it.
In my store i have a dislpay tank its a well planted aquarium. In it i had about 12,
1year old discus. The water was good, and the fish where very nice. All 12 of the
discus where from the same parents, and grew up in one tank. When i sold some of the
discus to one of my costumers, i noticed the color change in the fish. I knew that
they were stressed a bit and that they will regain the beutifull blue color. The next
day they were still dark. In about 2 weeks some of the discus started to show some color.
They were eating great from my hand. The water was as good as always, but the color just won't come back.
IS IT POSIBLE THAT THEY MISS THEIR BROTHERS AND SISTERS??
i have sold many discus and i never had this problem. usually they regained the color i a few hours.
WHAT CAN I DO TO AVOID THIS?
ANY INFO WILL BE APRICCIATED
THANK YOU

Houston, TX USA- Howdy Jack
I do like your website. And i'm a new discus fan, i have to say that i had discus before about
18 years ago when i was still living in the Netherlands. Now i want to pick it up again,
but between then and now is changed a whole lot.
I still do reseach on discus mean while i did set up the tank already about six weeks ago.
Ph=6,6 and nitrite= 0 as of ammonia to Temp about 84, i got ten cardinals, eight rummynose
two dwarf gouramies, eight corrydoras and six kuhlis.
tank history till now is perfect 37 gallon with a 280 marine emporer filter and as extra
i added a fluval 125 gallon for mechenical filteration as of nitro-zorb and carbon and
peat.
I like to order discus from you but i need some ffedback how that works.
I think that my tank is ready for four or maybe six discus.
Let me know something. This tank is set up at my office at work later this year i want to
instal a 125 gallon tank at my home also with discus.
O before i forgot i got all live plants in the 37 gallon tank
thanks Ben van der Noort

FT.Dodge, IA USA- I liked looking at all your picturs of discus. My mother and I have six discus together, and she just had one die last night. We are not sure why but sometimes with discus you just dont know why. We have had two different pairs lay eggs but they were never fertilized. Two were Highfin turquios and the other pair were, one was a pidgonblood and the other one is a turquois. They both have laid eggs at least six times and none of them successful. I think that my mothers other one is blue diomod, and mine is the most beautful heckel I have ever seen. I have had it for three years, when I got it,he was the size of a nickle and now is at least 5in. But anyways I am very curious if you have any information that would help us in our situation. Please if you could write back. Thankyou.

Regina, Sask Canada- Hello Jack. I had the pleasure of meeting you at your home a few years ago and buying some fish from you then as well as the previous year while on a trip in Florida. I can happily report that the fish did fine and several are still breeding happily (although the oldest paid or Coreulea are now approx 5 years old and only breed sporadically now. I am not really trying to breed them given their age, but they are still one of my favourite pair. I think that later this spring when the weather improves I will order some more to be shipped up here to Canada, although is there a concern about shipping in the winter months between Ft. Lauderdale and wintery Saskatchewan? If there isn't maybe I should order sooner? Any comments or thoughts would be appreciated. Take care and thank you again.

BOB JEFFERSON <ROBERTJEFF@AOL.COM>
ROSSENDALE, ENGLAND- I'VE BEEN A KEEN DISCUS ENTHUSIAST SINCE 1974, HAVING BRED THEM FOR THE FIRST TIME AT THAT STAGE. I WAS FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO VISIT EDWARD SCHMITT FOCKE IN BAD HOMBURG SOME YEARS AGO TO TALK DISCUS AND SEE SOME NEW WILD STRAINS HE HAD RECEIVED FROM HEIKO BLEHER, I THINK THEY MAY HAVE BEEN "COARI" BUT I'M NOT SURE. HE TOLD ME OF YOUR REGULAR VISITS TO SEE HIM AND HIS FAMILY AND YOUR FRIENDSHIP THROUGH DISCUS KEEPING. IT IS A SHAME SO MANY PEOPLE WHO HAVE NOT BEEN ANYWHERE NEAR AS SUCCESSFUL IN CREATING THE MULTITUDE OF COLOUR VARIETIES, ARE SO OFTEN LOATHE TO HELP DEVELOP THE KNOWLEDGE OF DISCUS. HAVING BEEN A KEEN HOBBYIST FOR 35YEARS, I NOW OWN 2 AQUATIC RETAIL OUTLETS IN THE UK AND OFFER A VARIETY OF STRAINS OF DISCUS. IF I GET THE CHANCE TO VISIT THE US, I WOULD VERY MUCH LIKE TO VISIT YOUR BREEDING SITE, IF THIS IS POSSIBLE. THE WEBSITE SHOWS SOME FINE SPECIMEN, KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.
KIND REGARDS
BOB JEFFERSON

Medford, Ma USA- I've fooled around with discus now about six years, and have purchased
them from 5 or 6 differant sources. I have bleached everything after
each failed attempt, and I'm ready to do it once again.A pet shop owner
said to me it took 25 times before she got healthy ones, thats a scary
thought. Only once have my fish been purchased from a pet shop, once from
a distrubter, the from breeders. It can't everyone else. I don't use
bloodworms, nor do I use brine shrimp--to many flukes. don't use black
worms or tubiflex. Prettymuch my own beefheart, shrimp, and fish mixture.
I add spinage vitamins from gold finn ,spirulina from the health food
store.I feed flakes from Mike Reed "The food your fish needs" Pellets
from OSI and soforth. The water in city of Medford is 9.0 with a high
concentration of cloramine--- I run it through 4 tanks. treat the water

Perth, WA AU- Hi,
I love the gorgeous photos Jack, but your website needs some help. In the section that says, "About Jack W.", there's nothing personal whatsoever. The section is about as engaging as a dead snapper. Who cares what other reviewers, critics, and/or books say about you! Your visitors want to meet Jack the concerned-about-the-latest-batch-of-fry-guy...not Mr. Cool Dude I'm-too-important-to-introduce-myself Jack. Come on...get f'ing real.

Terry Wright <tdwright@firstam.com>
Tucson, AZ 85712 USA- Hi, Jack. I've been a discus fancier for over 20 years and have all your books. I moved from San Francisco to Tucson over a year ago and am just now cycling a first 40-gal tank for some new discus.
There are no breeders (at least that I've been able to locate) in Tucson or Phoenix. So, I'm probably going to have to mail order, and you certainly came to mind.
Am most interested in blue turquoise, some light reddish striations in face and/or body OK (have no objections to solid blue body), nice hi-fin but not the exaggerated hi-body style you see from some Asian breeders. Your closest?

I love fish and have eight of my own including a 55 gal., a 20 gal., and a 15 gal. My favorite fish that I have is probably my African Knife Fish or my Oscar because of how they swim; so gracefully. Charles Fabri
Melbourne , Victoria Australia- Hi Jack,
Enjoyed your site. Just writing to comment on a trend I'm noticing in this coubtry at the moment. Everybody is trying to breed discus at the moment, and it seems any regard for upholding standards and quality are being ignored. Constantly you see deformed juveniles, with their mouths' hanging off the side, oversize eyes, blatant hormone treatment where even the smallest juvenile has colour through its pectoral fins, (and too nice a body for their age).
Some of the better breeders at clubs boast about spawns of eighty to ninety babies.
Breeding from wild or 1st, 2nd generation is unheard of, and you ask for German or American stock, and they say 'too dear.'
I feel as if I would simply be bying somebody elses' experiment.
What do you do?

Abraham Sihombing <abrahamsihombing@yahoo.com>
Jakarta, DKI Indonesia- Dear Mr. Jack Wattley,
I am happy to visit this web because there are some new strains that I have never seen before in my country, Indonesia.
I keep discus in my little house but they are only some ordinary discus strain. Actually I want to own discus of your strain, especially Panda Strain but I do not have enough money if I have to buy them at least 4 fish because of high price since my country’s currency (Rupiah) at the moment is suffering from depreciation. In other words, my country at the moment is suffering from economy crisis. Could you allow me to buy only 2 discus, for example?
If the price of Panda Strain of US$ 29.75, could you tell me the size of the fish? I would like to know size in order to give me imagination for preparing their aquarium.
If finally I decide to buy at least 4 fish although it is too expensive, could you guarantee that you deliver me two pair of discus that is consisted of male and female ? Because it is beautiful if discus swims in its own pair. If not, sometimes they can bite or fight one to others. Could you give me some answers of this phenomenon?
I know that keeping discus is very expensive although it is in my country, Indonesia. But I need your help to own some Panda Strain discus. Could you?
Sincerely Yours,

Hampton Bays, NY USA- We saw Jack Wattley at the Brooklyn Aquarium Society meeting in June 2000. He was very insightful and educating. We learned alot about Discus fish and he inspired us to buy six beautiful green Discus from Long Island Discus (a private breeder in Queens,NY). We love our new additions and look foward to feeding them right out of our hands each day. The only problem we think we now have is that it's become an addiction and we're starting to replace furniture with fish tanks in this tiny cottage we're renting. We'll have to move very soon just to make room for any fry we may have within the next year or so.

LAS VEGAS, NV USA- I LOVE your great pictures. I have not raised the Great Discus for over 15 years. I stopped when my pair of the most beautiful 7 colored died. I am now getting back into the swing of the Discus world and am already hooked again. I know I will be placing an order very soon after I get some more tanks. I sure wish there were still some of the 7 colors left. I continue to be told that the new colors are not able to breed. I sure hope that is not true after all the monies I have already paid out. I will be at the bookstore soon to purchase your books and let the good times roll. I am so glad I found your web site, Las Vegas has very little to offer in fish and sure look forward to my first order from your stock. Keep up the good work. I see from the people all over the world that you are doing a wonderful job. Thanks so much for your wonderful pictures that have hooked me again. I sure did miss the hours I used to spend sitting in front of my tanks.

of all discus. The good ones dont make it to me. but since I have loved them over 28
years some day God willing I will breed them. I would love jto here from you may you

So far I have gotten blood worms and they seem to like them. Please let me know what to feed these guys that i can pick up at a pet store. I have them in a 75 gallon tank with a few other fish. Well please let me know as soon as you can on the foods that they require. Thanks..........EDDIE
