I had the privelege of meetng Jack Wattley several years ago while in Florida and brought back home with me several discus. That was 8 years ago and I still have a pair of Blue Coerulea that are my grand old couple.
The fish were terriffic and Jack was very helpful and understanding with someone just getting started at that time. I bought his book and it is my bible when it comes to discus. I have had success and a few set backs
from time to time, but the information and help set out in the book and the information that Jack gave me in that meeting we had one sunny Florida afternoon will not be forgotten. The picture that my wife took and Jack
and I is still hanging in my house. I am planning to purchase more fish on my next trip to Florida. Thanks for everything Jack. Keep those quality fish coming!!

I have had Discus for over 15 years. I just purchase Jack Wattley Frozen Discus Food.
What is this stuff? The fish spit it out. I clouded the water. I had to remove the VERY Small powder like pieces from the tanks. I tried to return it to the store but was told that there are no refunds on frozen food.
I then asked the owner to let me put a cube of this STUFF in his discus tank. I did and he quickly removed it from the tank once he saw the mess the food makes of the water. Maybe small fry food could eat this STUFF?
$10 for this STUFF? I will stick to my homemade beefheart.

READING MANY COMMENTS FROM PAST MESSAGE BOARDS, IT'S AMAZING TO SEE THAT SO MANY PEOPLE HAVE NO CLUE ON HOW TO CARE FOR LET ALSONE HAVE A PAIR OF BREEDING DISCUS. PEOPLE SHOULD NOT BUY THESE IF YOU ARE JUST GOING TO WATCH THEM DIE BECAUSE YOU HAVE NO CLUE ON HOW TO CARE FOR THESE BEAUTIFUL CREATURES. EVERY BOOK I'VE READ TELLS YOU THAT DISCUS WILL PAIR OFF AND MATE BUT THEY NEVER GIVE A CLUE WHAT TO DO IF THE PARENTS DON'T CARE FOR THEM. THEY WANT YOU TO BUY MORE FROM THEM. THRU PATIENCE AND EXPERIMENTING I'VE BEGUN BREEDING DISCUS SUCCESSFULLY.

Enjoy the photos and info but would like a little genetic information as to the development of the strains or the results of various crossovers. Is it possible to come by your Florida hatchery and pick up some fish when I am in the States.

Came Across Your Website Jack. I Hope you and your family are well, Your Fish are always good.
I Thought I had rid myself of the Discus fever and then I came across a dying wild red in a dealers tank and had to
save it. I have it spawning with a young solid turq , But cannot find a mature Red male to match it
it.The Female is deep Red Brown to Crimson Body solid and has a solid steel blue Corona surround. It is only the third fish this good I have seen in 30 years, I will spend an hour looking at her. I have bought some young San Mar & Flame of the forrest to grow on. But I would like if possible to obtain a Wild Red or F1 Breeding/adult male.
Regards: Brian Toomey
PS: If I manage to get what I'm after will Send some young to preserve strain.

Hi Gabriel Posada,
I just ordered 6 discus and one 'gift' from you. When I got the fish, the fish looks wonderful,
the leopard snakeskins look very nice and very spotty on the whole body. The blue snakeskins you
sent to me are really bigger sizes that I ordered. For many years of ordering fish, especially discus,
I think you are the best of the best discus seller I ever had. I think I will order some more with you
later.

My tank is empty and newly set up with all live plants and excellent lighting.

Local fish store has advised me to put in other fish to "season" tank prior to putting in the 10 discus, and 2 bristle nose catfish which is all I want in tank. As I have never heard of doing this to a new tank, I would appreciate your advise.

John <jonpa7@attbi.com>

Dear Jack,

I am thinking of starting a planted Discus Tank. I have tried this once with some success but in the end all the fish died. I was using a 55 gal. tank with dual Ehiem 2211 canister filters and a aquaclear 200 for additional chemical filtration if needed. I was using a dual light hood and 2 Tritan daylight bulbs. I cycled the tank with several small tetras and 20 plants for about three months. The temperature was around 82-85 degrees and the ph stayed around 6.5 through out the life of the tank. I did 30% weekly water changes and I flushed out the canister filters with tank water every three or four months. I rotated this operation between the two 2211's so that the bio-filtration would not be drastically interrupted.

Once I felt that the tank was properly cycled and all plants and animals were thriving fairly well, I then decided to buy my Discus fish. I bought my Discus from a local pet store. They were fine for about six months and then they started developing serious problems. I found out later that some breeders feed their fry steroids to enhance the color and often times these fish will develop problems later in life. Because local pet stores are NOW not an option for me, I thought it would be best to try mail order breeders that specialize in Discus fish.

One of the major problems that I am facing is the idea of a planted tank that will support Discus fish. There are some plant species that can handle the lower ph values which the Discus require; even so, many of these plants do not grow well in temperatures ranging from 80 to 85 degrees. Many people claim that the temp is not the real problem but it is the co2 concentration or lack of co2 in the water that harms plants more than temperature. Others claim that mineral content and water quality is the leading factor for a healthy tank. These people contend that bi-weekly water changes, up to 50%, will restore co2 levels and replenish some if not all of the mineral content which all plants need to thrive. They also say that depending on the tap water in your area, some trace elements and fertilizers may be needed. Lighting is also a big issue and all those who have planted tanks recommend 12 to 14 hours of intense light for proper plant growth.

My question is: How do you feel about a planted tank for Discus fish? What would you recommend? Also, what would you recommend for a good filtration system. I thought I did all the right things, but now I am not so sure. Can you help me?

Thank you for your attention
Respectfully
John

Although I have heard that Discus are the "King of the Amazon" I know that your the
King of the Discus......that makes you the King of the Kings. I just started getting
interested in discus. Initially I didn't know anything about them. My husband liked
the way they looked and so we got one. Well he didn't too well and ultimatlly passed on
Since that experience I have reaad several books , some by you and others, Your's
are very comprehensive and informative. I am waiting for your newest book to be restocked.
Right now I have 6 discus. I have only had them for about a month bult I think they like
me, and of course I love them. I have a few different breeds, I have two piegon bloods
along with my others and they seem to be a little bullyish (is that a word) I'm not
sure how discus play but mine come out chase eachother around and bang noses. One of the
Piegon bloods is especially pushy...I call him "Wolly Bully". Is this just normal
discus play it is halerious (sp?). I have many hiding spots and Bully goes into this
jar type urn that is laying on it's side and sticks his little head out of a premaid
whole to grab a morsel...goes inside and eats....sticks his head back out of the whole
and grabs a bite goes back. He's like my puppy who grabs a mouthful of food and takes it
his safe spot to eat and back and forth and so on and so on. I can see how you fell in
love with them. I trying to feed them well, keep the water quality good and all the other
little things we are suppose to do. For some reason my water wants to stay cloudy. I have
done testing of the Ammonia, the nitrates , the ph, hardness and so on. I change about
25-30% of the water every other day and sometimes every day. I clean the rocks
I have a mellennium 3000 filter and two carbon cartridges comming out of a gravel
bed with the bubblers. I have no clue , I've tried bright and clear and two other
clearing agents. Have any other Ideas that I am neglecting to check??? Your
expert advice would be truly treasered.
Thanks in advance Jack
Jenny Seymour

I'm hoping for at5 least a pair, sexing will be difficult based on what I've read.

I'm setting up another larger tank to move these fish to and start another batch I plan to order from you. (who Else)

Jack's fish are highly prized throughout Asia fetching prices over $1000.00 if accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. I am in the process of setting up a couple tanks here in MD and am looking forward to obtaining some certified Wattley's!

Looking for an old photo of the digging of the well by the WPA workers that was in the Cleveland Press newspaper of February 14, l975. It also says that the photo was one taken in 1940. It is a photo of seven digging. I believe one of the men is my Dad. I would so like to get a clearer copy of that photo, and try to enlarge it, and hope that it would prove to me, that it IS a photo of my Dad. He passed away in 1950. Thank you for your help.

I just bought a Jack Dempsey a few days ago... it was black with bright yellow and grean dots all over it, but when I got it home it had turned white, and it's dots went away. I read that this is caused by stress or shock, but it's still a white color. I have it in a 5 gallon all by itself, with light, heat, bubbles, and a lil' tinny plant (fake)... is there something else that I could do to make him feel more at home?? I also read that they eat live bate, can they eat fish food? Well if they can, he hasn't!! He doesn't eat fish food, I put some in there, and he just looks at it and swims around!!! Then I drop some shrimp pellets in there and he jumps after it (well not "jump" he's a fish so, he can't jump, but you know what I mean) I think he thinks that it's a love, because it moves, but it's just some crap packed together in a pellet. This fish s really freaking me out... see I'm looking after a fish for my 10th grade biology class, and this was not my first choice, I took a Baita (or how ever you spell it, idc) then it died!!! It just started having problems breathing and then it died like 15 minutes later, I know because I stayed by it's side, I knew I really couldn't do nething to help it, but I felt helpless so, I jsut sat there and watched it. I chose a Jack Dempsey becasue I thought that it looked REALLY cool. But, it's turns out that it's a lot more work than I thought that it would be, I just hope I get extra credit for this!! Well I have to go it's late and I still have a paper I have to type bout it, due tomorrow! -Buh Byes, Love Lola

I have read about you since I am a kid. You have popularized discus so much and revolutionised the whole meaning of breeding. If there is a hall of fame for true discus breeder, you will have a million vote from me. Surprisingly I have started rearing discus again after getting really sick of the Horn craze in Malaysia. It is the right time too because prices of discus are low. Would be nice to import a few of your fishes but too much trouble from the authorities. My guess is the discus craze over here very soon, so I must as well start early! Best Regards.

You were the first real fancy discus breeder and plainly the best, and I hope you'll be breeding discus for many years yet. Thanks and regards.

Just getting started in the discus world and already addicted...and I must say that although I am new to this game...I love Jack! I am trying to figure out if the "yellow rose" discus is really a hybrid that is out there for purchase, or if I stumbled across it one a website of some no name hobbyist who accidently came out with a beautiful yellow discus? I really want an almost solid yellow discus in my collection, but not sure yet where I could find it. Is there such a thing?
