I have read both of your books and found them very helpful! The concept of the second book was very compelling. It allowed the opportunity to see that no one method of raising Discus was the rule, but that a general concensus was reached on key ideals with room for various idiosyncrasies depending on resources and personal experiences!

wonderful pictures. i am planning on getting my first discus soon and am shopping around, any advice is welcomed. Actually i do have a question, does anyone know if it is good or bad or neither to keep blue rams with discus? altum angels with discus? it is a 125gal, heavily planted, expecting to keep six or so discus.

i've been reading about discus in hopes to buy some in the near future. i've been in the fish hobby about 5 yrs and have never purchased discus because the people at the stores often scare you into believing they are nearly impossible to keep alive. i understand they require specific water qualties yet i do not quite understand what carbonate hardness is. i do understand about ph and acidic and alkaline water. perhaps you could give me some better insight on water chemistry. also do discus require a certain tank size to start with? thanks

Beginner breeder looking for sales advice

ive recently aquired 8 large discus (3 cobalt and 5 red turq/cobalt mix) they are in a 150 with a pH under 5 and a temp of 86F. I change 30-50% 3 times/week and am hoping to breed these fish. one of the larger discus has its tube out and is clearly a male but has not yet paired of with any of the others. the second day after i had put the discus in, i had noticed fungus growing on the side of the fish that as wounded when neted. i immediatly put on a uv sterilizer and the next day the fungus was completely cleared and the wound looked 99% better. i do have one question to any one reading this and would like someone to help me out--is it possible to breed discus with others present. That is are the babies at risk of being eaten or do the parents do a god job of protecting then. thanks

I am constantly getting surprised looks from people I talk to about my discus
when I tell them that I keep all twelve of them with a variety of tetra's.

Hello there,

I'm living right now in Toronto where I have a 25 gallons aquarium with quite a variety of fish including 3 Discus. One Blue Turquoise Discus, one Blue Diamond Discus and one Red Turquoise Discus. I would like to breed them but I don't even know how to determine their sexuality yet. And I don't know the required condition for them to breed. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. By the way, U have some tremendous Discus. Thanks.

Recently, I made a visit to your hatchery. I must say it was one of the most amazing aquarium related experiences I have ever had! Gabriel was very helpful. The only bad thing was Gabriel's little boy crying in his crib, but I was so into the tanks, I was oblivious to it all! I purchased 3 fish for my new disus tank, and I'm planning on returning to your hatchery for more. I have kept African Cichlids for many years, and other Cichlids from around the world, but never discus. Your discus urged me to start a tank for them, and they are doing magnificent. The Wattley's Discus strain is exceptional. I have owned several strains and found them to be very hardy.

I am a 17 year old Singaporean and have long heard of your achivements in the discus scene. It is such a great honour of mine to pen this in your guestbook. For many years, I have been faithfully reading articles & books on discus, their breeding, feeding etc. I must say, among the dozens or more books that I have read, only few are comparable to yours both in content and technique. Your unselfish act of sharing valuable information with the world, indeed has brought joy to many breeders ( amatures and professionals alike ).
To me, no other fishes can replace the status of discus in my heart. They are such graceful fishes. The only whimp I have about them are their high price tags. Hopefully, there will come a day when prices are more affordable. Just one last note, I truly hope to meet you personally should you come to Singapore in the future. You will be more than welcome to visit my residence although there are not many quality discus to speak of.

i am in the process of cycling a new tank for discus from your facility. i can not wait till i get to buy the discus and to get started. Mr. Wattly's books were a great help on my first few discus tanks and i just wanted to tell him thanks for all the insight it really helps.

I've read a couple of Jack's books and have been a discus lover for about 10 years. I successfully bred my own for a couple of years but since we've had 3 children, I don't have the time now. So I plan to order several of your discus for my 125 in the family room.

Hello everyone,
Reading all the e-mails is a great way to interact with all the other Discus lovers. I my self have 6 Discus and have went through some problems with the water quality. I have a Rainbow lifeguard system with mechanical filter, chemical filter, heater, fluidized bed filter. I thought with this filter system I could go months without water changes, boy was I wrong. I learned with the more I feed (to make the Discus grow) the water should be changed more offen. I also have too much gravel and feed the fish frozen and live food. They seem to be doing great. I've had them almost a year, except for the dime size snake skin I just got. I have a queation, do they breathe heavy when you feed alot? Nice site!

I had brout 20 white dragins and they were find to tow mounths past and 11 died 2 more
mouth paths and the rest were ruonted. I 10 marlboro red discus they look natral,
3 mouth later they were tangeren.

I always thought they were beautiful creatures and now I have the time and money to purchase

I have a question concerning a discus breeder located in Ft. Lauderdale, FL about 20 years ago. His name was Herman Sohns. Have you ever heard of him? If so, whatever happened to him and his fish? I raised many discus back then with his help. I was a grad student at U of M. It was a great time to do this. I am currently raising a half dozen fish now in my home. They are called "Pigeon Reds" Have you ever heard of the strain? They seem to be very hardy. But then again, it always starts out that way. I hope this doesn't get as nuts as it did a long time ago. What this site really needs is hints and tips for beginners. Many people would be able to benefit from Mr. Wattley's experience and personal findings. Not many people have a lot of experience at keeping discus and this could be the thing which most people would benefit from. It could also produce sales as people would know what to do once they got their fish.

I have a 140 gallon tank.The dimensions are 60w.30h.18d.I would like to know what kind of lighting should I use because I want to have plants and also what kind of fish would go good with the discus?

I am interested in the red panda discus that you have for sale. You wrote that they were created by cross breeding with pigeon bloods. Have heard from a local long time breeder that pigeon bloods do not make good parents, any comments on this issue???

I have a mated pair of red turquoise that spawned last fall every 14 days for about two months. The closest I got to them raising the fry on their own was the two of them fighting over the babies. The male kept pushing the female away and by the next morning there was nothing left. Previous attempts ended in the eggs either becoming wigglers and eaten or eaten before hatching. I've read every article on discus that I have come across and have attempted everything I can think of but with not any better luck. Any info. would be greatly appreciated.

jack, you certainly have some of most beautiful discus i have ever seen. i have been raising tropical fish since i was seven, which is now 43 years. i have been a subscriber of tfh since 1961-1962, and still have my old subscriptions! i currently have twenty tanks, as space will not allow any more at the present. all twenty house discu. this is my hobby, which also helps me relieve strees from my job (i have been a police officer for 24+ yrs.) nothing more relaxing, esciting, and pleasurable than coming home to my discus! best of luck to you!

I am currently setting up a 90 gallon Amazon biotope aquarium and plan to order some discus from you when it is ready...maybe in a few months. I have always been a fan of Jack Wattley. The quality and beauty of each one of his discus is astounding. I am looking to add some new pairs to my stock. Please keep me informed on any new developments.

I bought several discus from you in the past. They all lived to around 8 years of age. Realistically, how many discus could I fit in my 150 gal tank? I have a large wet/dry filter to go with it. Is 15 discus too much to stock it with?

I'm mostly interested in solids and dragons. I meet you a couple of years ago, glad to see your still into discus.

Hello Mr. Wattley, I am a new guest in your website and I must say that your work in the fish industry is truly remarkable. I am a new Discus enthusiast. I probably had all kinds os fish before freshwater, saltwater you name it I probably had it. All of the fish that I have had I end up giving to the pet store that I work for. But nothing can convince me to give the Discus that I own. They are such magnificent fish and their beauty is unmathced. They don't call them the king of the aquarium for nothing. My husband and I has been discuskeepers for three years now, and everything just works fine.

I have been breeding angelfish for a couple of years sucessfully. I enjoy this hobbie a lot. How difficult would it be to make a living at raising high quality discus. I have invested a tremendous amount of time, and have enjoy every second of it. Your comments would be greatly appreciated.
